Topic 24: Deja Vu

At some point in your life you are bound to feel like you have deja vu, 60-80% will experience it. Very few people actually know what daja vu is, but do experience it. Duja vu is that feeling you get when you are in a situation, place etc and you feel as though you have done it before or been there before, even though it hasn’t happened before. Duja vu is actually French for “seen already”. But what is causing it?

The truth is that scientists have hardly any idea why we have duja vu and find it hard to study because this feeling just suddenly happens, here are a few theories.

According to psychoanalysts it happens because of unbalanced chemicals in the brain. The memory area of the brain hold important information such as, long term events and facts and our brains remember how we felt at that particular moment. When ever we see something, hear or feel something that matches one of our memories, due to the unbalanced chemicals in our brains it feels like we have been in that same place or done the same activity.

Another theory is that when we smell, see or feel something that we have felt before there is a mix up in the sensory input and memory-recalling output. Another theory is that we have an error in timing. When we experience something, sensory information is re-routed to long term shortage instead of short term, causing a delay and the feeling of duja vu.

The last theory is a bit out there and is not scientific. Dreaming in REM occurs every 90 – 100 minutes, 3 to 4 times a night. You wont remember all the dreams you have in the night but only the one you wake up too. It is believed by many that you have dreamt that moment, you can’t exactly remember it and now it is coming true.

Facts:

  • It is a phenomenon
  • Not all people will experience it
  • Most times thins event will happen the person is between the ages of 15-25 years
  • It occurs in people with and without a medical condition
  • People sho suffer from temporal-lobe seizure can experience this before and during a seizure
